Children get watchdog

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

A Commissioner for Children, the medical director of the Plunket Society, Dr lan Hassell, has been appointed by the Government.

The position is provided for in the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act, recently passed through Parliament.

Dr Hassell will oversee the care and protection of children’s interests. He will have the power to investigate decisions made or actions taken under the new legislation.

The Minister of Social Welfare, Dr Cullen, said Dr Hassell would be a professional advocate for children and young people.

He would monitor and assess the policies and practices of the department or any other body acting under the law, and advise on policies to promote the welfare of children.

It was important the commissioner have credibility with both professionals and those in the community involved with the care and protection of children, Dr Cullen said.
