Canterbury teams record big wins

From KEVIN TUTTY in Wellington The Canterbury men’s and women’s hockey teams recorded the biggest wins on the second day of the champions’ tournament yesterday in totally contrasting conditions. The men played at midday in calm, mild weather and beat Manawatu 7-0. Last night the women played in heavy rain and cold temperatures, but still managed a 6-0 win against North Shore. It was the first-half performance by the women which paved the way for its success. It led 5-0 by half-time. Shirley Haig, the Canterbury coach, lamented the poor secondhalf performance by Canterbury against Hawke’s Bay on Thursday, but could not have been too displeased with last night’s effort.

It was credit to Canterbury that it managed to play attractive hockey in conditions that had players rubbing arms, legs and hands to try to restore feeling to their limbs. Chris Arthur (tain and lOmin), Mary Clinton (Bmin and 21min), Sue Duggan (28min), and Jenny Turner (54min) were the goal scorers. Hopefully the conditions will not have taken too much out of the players for the vital clash with Otago this afternoon.

These two teams are the only ones with perfect records after two rounds. Canterbury’s secondhalf performance was awesome. It scored five goals and had the Manawatu defence under constant pressure. The final whistle was a merciful relief for Manawatu which had the misfortune to lose its captain, Wayne Frost, with an injured wrist in the second half. He had led by example with his doughty defence and high work rate. The statistics of the first and second halves were an indication of Canterbury’s commitment. It forced three penaltycorners to one in the first half and eight to none in the second. There were only about three occasions that Manawatu reached the Canterbury circle after the interval. Ewen Holstein, the Canterbury coach, was pleased with the performance, especially the pasing. “Three or four times 10 or more passes were strung together in a movement which shows we are holding possession better. But we will have to improve further to beat Auckland and Wellington.”

Hawke’s Bay, which crashed to a 0-5 loss against the Canterbury women on Thursday, yesterday aided Canterbury’s

bid to win the title for a fifth consecutive season by beating Auckland 4-2.

The Auckland men struggled to maintain a perfect record against Northland. It was not until 2min from full-time that Jim Smith scored from a penalty stroke to give Auckland a 1-0 win. Wellington scored three first-half goals and eventually beat the President’s XI, 4-0. The teams: Canterbury men: P. Berry; T. Harvey, M. Tynan; M. Skilton, D. Penfold. Sub: (G. Pierce 55min), A. Innes; D. Grundy, D. Mills (G. Edwards 55), R. Schoeman (C. Mcßobb 55), C. Leslie, G. Clark. Women’s team: S. Amos; M. Clinton, K. O'Grady, C. Reriti, L. Rouse, I. Thomson; K. Trolove, J. Turner, M.
