Gun-dealer to face trial

Trial by jury will be faced by a Christchurch gun-dealer on a charge of possessing a 12-gauge shotgun except for a lawful and proper purpose. David Matthew Tipple was remanded to a predepositions conference later this month. Tipple, aged 30, was set down for a defended hearing in the District Court yesterday on charges of discharging a shotgun with intent to frighten, presenting it at Rodger Jelly, and possessing the weapon. Counsel, Mr Nigel

Hampton, Q.C., said he had not realised until this week that his client had the right of election on the shotgun charge. Sergeant Kevin Morrison said that because the police were ready to proceed with the defended hearing, he could not consent to the further remand, but it was allowed by Judge Noble. The charge related to an incident on April 19 in which Tipple was allegedly attacked by a group of skinheads and fired a shotgun in the air to frighten them off.
