Blown light foils getaway

A blown headlight on a getaway van cost a burglar a $15,000 haul of clothes he had stolen from a Christchurch company. The vehicle, with only one light working, was spotted by a routine police patrol driving along Travis Road, North New Brighton, just after midnight on Wednesday. The driver failed to stop, and was chased to nearby Vivian Street, where he ran off. Inside the van, the police found 119 jerseys, 63 pairs of jeans and a large assortment of socks, shirts, jackets and heavy coats, part of the proceeds from a burglary at Anglo American Chemicals, Phillipstown. The van, a company vehicle taken from the site, transported the clothes, while another carted off about $15,000 of automotive painting equipment. It has not been recovered.
