Sport in brief

Frosts wanted

Although it is most unlikely that the outdoor ice skating season will open at Lake Ida this week-end, the president of the Lake Ida Winter Sports Association, Mr Bert Lyttle, said yesterday that he was optimistic of an early start. Last year the season started at Queen’s Birthday week-end but persistent north-westerly winds, a dreaded wind for the inland lake, restricted skating to only a few days. It was the fourth successive year that skating had been severely limited. Mr Lyttle said that unsufficient ice and too much snow were the main problems at present. His wish for the next few days is foi heavy frosts in the Lake Coleridge region.

Rugby tourists

The Suburbs Rugby Football Club will take the South Australian Under 19 team under its wing during its eight-day stay in Christchurch. The Australian state team arrived yesterday afternoon and will play the first of three matches against Suburbs Under 18 at Hoon Hay Park tomorrow. On Monday morning the Australians will oppose a Suburbs invitation XV at Hoon Hay Park and the final fixture will be against the Hillmorton High School first XV at the school grounds on June 7.

McGuigan retires

The former world featherweight champion, Barry' McGuigan, retired from boxing today after suffering a shattering defeat against a Londoner, Jim McDonnell. The Irishman’s hopes of regaining the crown were destroyed by a shock fourth-round stoppage because of a badly-cut right eye. “I said when I started my comeback that if I lost I would retire. I don’t intend to reverse that,” said McGuigan. “Boxing has been very good to Barry McGuigan. I just wish I could have given everyone better value for money.”—NZPA-Reuter.
