Record chess entries
“The Press” chess teams’ competition for secondary and intermediate schools continues to expand. A record 43 teams have entered the nineteenth tournament, to be held in the second term. The previous best figure was 39 last year. In the first round of the premier competition, the A grade title-holder, Burnside High School, will oppose Christ’s College. The opening round for the A and B grades will be on the week starting June 12. The intermediate grade, which has 21 entries, will be held on successive afternoons at two venues in July, and the girls’ grade will be over a round robin, the top two teams meeting in the final. A newcomer to the competition is Manning
Intermediate, and Breens Intermediate returns after an absence of five years. The full list is:— A grade: Ashburton, Burnside, Cashmere, Christchurch 8.H.5., Christ’s College, Shirley 8.H.5., St Andrew’s. B grade: Aranui, Ashburton B, Burnside B, Christchurch B.H.S. B, Christchurch B.H.S. C, Christ’s College B, Hornby, Linwood, Papanui, Shirley B.H.S. B, St Andrew’s B, St Bede's. Girls’ grade.—Ashburton, Burnside, St Margaret’s. Late entries will be accepted. Intermediate grade: Breens (2), Cathedral College, Cathedral Grammar, Chisnallwood (2), Christchurch South, Cobham (2), Heaton, Kirkwood, Linwood (2), Manning, Medbury (2), Merrin, St Andrew's Preparatory (2), St Michael’s (2).
