Emotional return by Snow
PHOEBE SNOW “Something Real” (Elektra, 60852-1). After an eight-year absence, Phoebe Snow is back on track with an LP that takes in much of her personal life during that period — a personal illness and looking after a daughter. Things that are real are touched upon, and times when she
thought she was standing on shaky ground. Snow’s songwriting is
. exceptional. It is matched by her voice. “Touch Your Soul” has both these elements as the song deals with a swinging single who isn’t really swinging at all. Behind it the drum machine programme has been set up to tick slowly like a grandfather clock. “Something Real” is worth getting for this alone. “Something Real” is exactly that. It is a beautiful
album, filled with emotion, particularly on Snow's own songs. The other choices, “Mr Wondering,” for example, seem to sum up Snow’s own life. The quality of the backing music is just as good and Snow has not lost any of her vocal power. This is not shaky music, yet she can shake you up when you hear it. ★★ ★ ★ — NEVIN TOPP
