Have your say in Canterbury's future This is an open invitation to all the citizens of Christchurch and Canterbury to attend the Going for Goals Public Forum, Christchurch Town Hall, 3rd - 4th June 1989. What is Going for Goals? Going for Goals is the process of examining the strengths and weaknesses of the region, identifying opportunities and by public consensus, setting targets and goals. In brief, planning the future of the region. Why Bother? We believe our region has a wealth of resources that remain relatively untapped and underdeveloped. Our natural, human and man-made resources make Canterbury unique in the world, yet we lack direction, and have no clear plan or goals for the future. What is Goal Setting? A goal is something to aim for. Many of us do this in our own way day by day, month by month or year by year. We would never achieve our objectives if there were no clearly identified path towards our goal. Therefore we must set our goals and objectives for the city and province if we want a healthier, wealthier and more prosperous region. Our goals must also define the time frame for achievement, the resources required, and have an auditing system to monitor progress. The Forum The forum is on the Saturday and Sunday of Queen's Birthday Weekend (June 3 & 4) and everyone is welcome to attend both days and contribute their comments and ideas. The forum will be divided into six areas of interest called Discussion Groups. Each Discussion Group is led by a moderator whose only role is to make sure everybody has a fair chance to speak. Experts will also be on hand to give a brief summary of the current situation and answer questions if necessary. The Discussion Groups There are six Discussion Groups and we ask that you join the one that most clearly represents your field of interest. They are: Business Development / Culture, Sport and Recreation/ I Education and Health / Primary Resources/ Technology and Information Services / Transport Services You will appreciate that many of these overlap and have common ■BHwSMfiRI interests but this will be dealt with in Bmrrnm™ the general sessions. y ___ Im BHHh smb| iMiIW Vl v&Sv ■ffISwSBSB B e f° re the Forum We ask that you start thinking about your cor| t r ibution to the future of the region; your ideas, your dreams, your v ’ s ’ ons - kefs acknowledge now the shortcomings and bottlenecks of the JSwM IM past and move on to the positive side of planning for the future. We HBmmhhJlß suggest you talk with your family, friends, neighbours, schools, business colleagues, and organisations BHmhWSH rst ar| d ec '^ e t 0 come ’Hdividually or collectively with your contribution, ready to give. After the Forum HBBLmmBHS is when the real work for the Discussion Groups begins. These interest groups will be contracted to form Task Forces that BWMMSWbM accept responsibility to put into action the ideas and recommendations of the forum. The plans and goals for the future can only be achieved by having a clear vision, the marshalling of resources, public accountability and a set time frame. Your role then will be to act as auditors - demanding and getting action from these Task Forces. You will see results. Who Can Anyone. There are no barriers. We want mothers and fathers, high schoolers, students, employers, employees, the unemployed, the retired. But let's be a little parochial. If you live or work in Canterbury, you're welcome. If you cannot attend the Forum please write your thoughts and ideas down and post to our box number. How to Register I RI By Post: On another page of this paper is a registration form. A I f The Role Model iTI 8 J A i \ Ten years ago Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A, was described by "Time" magazine as a decaying backwater of the V w L J Mississippi. Last year "Fortune" magazine labelled Memphis as one of the top six cities in the States. A miracle? No. They set in process the Going for Goals formula. We know the formula works. It will work in J Canterbury. At the forum, meet Ron Terry, the man from Memphis who helped guide his city through its I remarkable revival. I Important M This is just the first forum of many and if the consensus of opinion is that smaller forums for special interest | groups take place after Queens Birthday weekend, then these will be implemented. No one can do more for Canterbury than the people of Canterbury themselves. FAX: 798-658 0 TRUST BANK CANTERBURY Major sponsor of Going for Goals
