Futons—new bedding style and innersprings too
The First Floor sells a range of innerspring beds and futons made by the well-known manufacturer, Bliss.
Among the innerspring products is the Bliss “Cumulus” which has double springing in the mattress and the base, in the sides, corners and across the lumbar zone of the mattress to prevent sagging and add longer life to the bed.
It has two high tensile border wires and polypropylene webbing attached to each spring unit to ensure consistent edge to edge support. Its cruiser box spring base has four headboard fittings to stop swaying. This model has a pure wool pillow top which qualifies for the Wool Mark. “Premier Trio” is a trio of the same style of bed with firm, medium and soft comfort options, at the same price. Each of the “Premier Trio” beds incorporates the benefits of the “Bliss Cumulus,”
excluding the pure wool pillow top. Optional extras are a zip-on custom-made pure wool top, which gives all the benefits of a wool sleeper at less than the usual price with the added advantage of secure fitting. It can be washed or taken off during summer. All Bliss brands have a twin option, twin mattresses and bases which zip together and give independent suspension as well as two different comfort options. The “Midnight S.E.” is a super economy model with a deep luxurious quilted finish on both sides of the mattress.
The original futon mattress was developed in Asia centuries ago. In Japan it is a firm, cotton wadding-filled product.
In the Western world, futon mattresses and associated slat bed frames are the newest and fastestgrowing development in the bedding industry. Western futon mat-
tresses tend to be softer than their Asian counterparts. The slat bed frames used with the mattress gives greater comfort and the ability to minimise pressure points, giving relaxing and deep sleep.
Slat bed frames can be made in solid rimu with clear lacquer or black lacquer finishes. The posture slats are made from beech imported from West Germany, with seven laminations for long life and durability. A special feature is Bliss’s use of rubber pivot shoes to house and support the slats. The pivot shoes are also imported from West Germany. They allow maximum slat movement to cushion the contours of the body. Slat bed frame designs are simple and elegant, fitting into any bedroom setting. Matching solid rimu bedroom furniture suites are available with all Bliss slat bed designs. The queen or king size slat bed frame has two
separate rows of slats and shoes, providing a unique and independent suspension system. Bliss supplies three different futon mattresses to meet different preferences for firmness. The Bliss “Ultra Wool Futon” is available in black calico, tufted or quilted black parachute. It has five layers of specially treated carded wool on either side of a 100 mm polyurethane foam core to give the therapeutic benefits of pure wool. It has a good resilience factor, and is very comfortable. The Bliss “Spring Wool Mattress” has a firmer construction using wool, but it also has a complete spring unit providing the foundation for the wool instead of polyurethane foam.
The Bliss “Spring Omi” is the classic premium innerspring with the construction of the “Premier Trio” innerspring, but finished in quilted black and rust parachute.
