Trust joins fight for chapel
The Christchurch Civic Trust is backing the Historic Places Trust in its attempt to retain the Christchurch Hospital Nurses’ Chapel on its present site and get the building’s classification changed. A spokesman for the Civic Trust, Mr lan Wilson, said it had also been
decided to urge the Canterbury Hospital Board to set aside an area in the new hospital building for worship that would be easily accessible to people in wheelchairs. Mr Wilson said the Civic Trust had not got behind the battle to save the/chapel earlier because
it did not fully understand the facts. It now appreciated the architectural merits of the building and its stained glass but realised the hospital board could not make financial provision in its budget to build and furnish a new chapel. He understood such a commitment was outside the board's powers.
