Obituary Bro. W. G. Carpenter

Brother William George Carpenter, former district secretary of the Independent Order of Rechabites and a resident of Christchurch for 45 years, died recently in Auckland. He was 99. Brother Carpenter was born in Dundee and travelled to Dunedin as a young man, following his trade of cabinetmaker. After his marriage, he went to Melbourne as a divinity student for the Church of Christ, graduating with a gold medal. His

first call was to a Nelson church, then Wellington and Onehunga, in Auckland. While in Wellington, Brother Carpenter was well known as Uncle George of the children’s hour at 2YA. In 1935 he became the district secretary of the Independent Order of Rechabites. Brother Carpenter moved to Christchurch in 1937, when the office of the Rechabites was transferred to the city

from Wellington. He continued in the position until 1966. Brother Carpenter was also a well known figure in the Friendly Society Movement, of which he was a past-president of the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies. While in Christchurch he served as president of the Edgeware Bowling Club and was made a life member of the club. Brother Carpenter/ is survived by his son.
