Surprise choice
The Canterbury A rugby selector, Mr Frank Jack, has caused mild surprise by his choice of five-eighths for the team he mischievously refers to as “Christchurch City” in the annual Town-Country game next Monday. The two seasoned Canterbury and former New Zealand inside backs, Wayne Smith and Warwick Taylor, will both be on the reserves bench for the traditional Queen’s Birthday match.
Mr Jack has decided to match two specialist first five-eighths in the Town lineup, with Greg Coffey playing inside Stephen Bachop. This breaks up the Bachop brothers’ combination behind the scrum, but Stephen Bachop will be alongside his Linwood colleague, Andrew McCormick, in midfield.
The team is:— Richard Connell, Paula Bale, McCormick, Wiremu Maunsell, Stephen Bachop (vice-cap-tain), Coffey, Graeme Bachop; Chris England, Murray Henderson (captain), Mark McAtamney, John Jackson, Seymour, Tavita Sio, Cropper, Tala Kele. Reserves — Backs: Allan Lindsay, Andrew Simcock, Taylor, Smith. Forwards: Welsh, Penney, Kerry Pauling, Gavin Hill.
