Devoy to play both sexes
Susan Devoy. the women’s world number one, will be playing against both males and females in the North Island squash championships in Napier at Queen’s Birthday week-end. Devoy has been seeded No. 1 for the women’s event and No. 21 for the men’s event at the tournament, being played on the Hawke’s Bay club courts. The New Zealand Squash Rackets Association has granted her special dispensation to play in men’s events on the Moro national circuit, subject to final approval by the tournament organisers. She also intends to compete in the men’s event for the Canterbury Open the weekend after. Her intention is maintaining her form for the Australian circuit by competing against hard-hitting men players.
In the North Island men’s open the New Zealand closed champion, Stephen Cunningham (College Rifles, Auck-
land) is expected to retain his title. Scott Harrison (Ponsonby) and Glen Wilson (Royal Oak) are seeded second and third. The women's seeds are headed by Devoy 1, Joanne Williams (Eden Epsom) 2, Donna Newton (Remuera) 3, and the top junior, Lynora Hati (Geyser City) 4.
• Meantime, some of the leading Canterbury squash players will be playing for big travel prizes in the McKenzies Linwood Open tournament this week-end.
