VOLLEYBALL The battle for the fourth qualifying place in the men's southern league volleyball championship took another turn on Saturday when Aranui-Smash downed Shirley Relics, 3-1, at Pioneer Stadium. Smash now has 20 points from 14 games and appears set to battle out fourth position with the Relics and Scorpions (Dunedin). The third placed side, Vikings (Dunedin), is not out of sight of the three teams below it and everything points to the competition being tight. Vikings has lost to both the Relics and Scorpions this season white Smash appears to be on the improve and will be a threat to all three sides immediately above it. Only the top four teams qualify for the national championships In Auckland in July. TABLE TENNIS Avonside I beat the competition leader, Linwood, 6-5, to take the lead itself in the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s winter premier grade inter-club competition after five rounds.
The expected clash between the unbeaten Henry Redmond (Linwood) and Karl Entwistle was an anticlimax. Entwistle, after a shaky start, looked to have control and won 21-17, 21-17. His sharp angle top-spin drives were too difficult for Redmond to block effectively. Avonside raced to a 5-2 lead, but a good doubles win and a surprise win by Dave Johnston over Darren Entwistle gave Linwood a more respectable final total. Avonside now has a one point lead over Linwood, as the competition moves into the second stage.
Avonside 2 had a 10-1 win over Riccarton, moving the team closer to the leaders and ensuring Riccarton will have to play a promotionrelegation match against the top A team, Avonside 1, which has John Richards, Brian Wilson, Dave Mcßride and Bert Thompson. Matu Johnston returned from Australia and showed good support for Kevin Duffy and Lyndon White with two singles wins. In the other match Landsdowne had a narrow 6-5 win over Dallington, with Peter de Boer winning three singles. Results:— Avonside 1 6, Linwood 5. D. Entwistle st io Redmond, 10-21, 18-21; lost to B.
