Stokes to defend lead
Brian Stokes of North Can- j terbury, driving his Ford i Sierra 4x4, will defend his ( national rally championship 1 lead this week-end in the Mainfreight Southland rally, < the second of the five rounds S which make up the series. A top performance by i Stokes would give him a 1 handy advantage in his quest i to retain the title, as his two I main rivals in the series, Neil i Allport and Tony Teesdale of i
Auckland, both failed to finish the opening round inCanterbury with their Mazda 323 four wheel drives. Stokes won the Canterbury event, and was the winner in Southland last season. While the outright honours on the rally seen likely to be fought out between the leading group A drivers, the battle between the lesser modified group N contenders, promises to be equally in-
tense. The winner of the first round, Mark Jennings of Wellington, driving a Toyota Celica, is ranged against the promising Lancia Integrate of Wayne Pittams and the national junior champion, Stu Weeber from Christchurch, with his Subaru Omega. The Southland rally comprises 12 special stages totalling 235kms.
