Snowboards popular
Such is the growing popularity of snowboarding that two specialist instructors (instead of one) have been employed in the ski school at Mount Hutt this season. “There were 200 lessons of snowboarding last year — not bad for a first season,” said the ski school director, Michael Birch-Jones (known almost exclusively as "8.J.”). Last year Jim Easton, from Cooper Mountain, Colorado, had sole charge of the snowboard “department.” For the 1989 ski season Easton, aged 21, will be assisted by William Goloveyko, from another Colorado ski resort, Vail. Easton (known at Mount Hutt as “Jimmy the ‘E’ ”) has sufficient international standing to be a judge at the world snowboarding championships in Breckenridge, Colorado. B.J. Jones said the first platter lift at Mount Hutt was ideal for learning snowboarding and the good ones were able to ride the T-bar. “We have no problem with them (snowboarders) on the hill.”
This year more boards will be available for hire.
While telemarking was not as "hot” at Mount Hutt last year as snowboarding, the ski school will continue its strong commitment to that discipline and employ a telemarking instructor full time. > hllililllMMlllillillWl
