World Cup ski-ing in Australia
World Cup ski-ing will come to Australia this winter for the first time and under F.I.S. rules New Zealand will be allowed up to two men on the start list.
One of those will certainly be the two-time Winter Olympic representative, Simon Wi Rutene, of Lake Okareka,
who recently returned from his most successful European campaign. He now has a world ranking of 78 for giant slalom with 31.50 F.I.S. points. The two men’s World
Cup races granted by the F.I.S. (Federation Internationale de Ski) to the Snowy Mountains ski resort of Thredbo, New South Wales, are scheduled for August 11 and 12. They will launch the 1989-90 World Cup circuit — nearly four months before the first European events. To get to Thredbo a drive of more than 500 km is required from both Sydney and Melbourne, the shortest routes being 509 km and 525 km respectively.
F.I.S. races at Mount Hutt, New Zealand, on August 3, 4 and 5 — two slaloms and a giant slalom — will feature some of the world’s top male skiers, preparing for the Thredbo events. The dates so far confirmed for the New Zealand Ski Association’s 1989 race calendar are: July 29, 30.— Mount Hutt series, two national points races. August 3, 4 and 5.— F.I.S. men’s events, two slaloms, giant slalom, Mount Hutt.
