Prices firm at Totara Flat sale
Store cattle prices firmed significantly when a good quality yarding was offered at the Totara Flat saleyards on Monday. Local fatteners bid freely on the adult stock, and prices fully reflected the recent rises in export schedule returns, and the lowering exchange rate. A number of Canterbury cattle, which had been grazed on the West Coast during summer, added interest to the yarding, and combined with lots from local vendors to provide a high quality offering. Outside buyers from Murchison and Culverden provided keen buying power, and claimed a number of the feature pens. Banks Peninsula clients, Orton Bradley Park, offered more than 100 two year Simmental and Hereford steers, the best of which fetched $5OB. Mr Rex Decanter, of Port Levy, sold a line of Hereford and Hereford cross steers for up to $458. The strength of the market held through to the heifer section of the sale. Best of the adult heifers
made $354, with smaller lots down to $290. Several pens of small calves were sold , after the adult cattle. Well-marked, late-born calves fetched up to $lB5.
The sale concluded with the offering of registered stud bulls on account Mr Fred Campbell. The top price for a rising two-year Hereford bull was $lOOO. Sales include:
