What’s in a name?
The Art Galleries and Museums Association has changed its name. The new name, Museums Association of Aotearoa New Zealand — Te Ropu Hanga Kaupapa Taonga Incorporated, reflects members’ views that “museum" is used generically to refer to institutions which collect, while
“gallery” refers to those which sell. The Maori name means “the group whose object is to ensure that the treasures are well cared for.” The decision was taken at the association’s annual meeting in Wanganui. Implementation of the
treaty of Waitangi, changes to funding structures and new ways of managing collections were among the other subjects considered at the meeting. Anthony Savill, of the Canterbury Museum, and Robin Sutton, of Ferrymead His toric Park, are on the association’s council.
