Thai International flies long-range DClOs twice a week between New Zealand and Bangkok. On Thursdays it provides a direct link through Christchurch, departing for Bangkok (via Auckland) at 11.55 a.m. The flight time from Auckland is about 11 hours 30 minutes. South Islanders can conveniently fly non-stop to Christchurch on a flight leaving Bangkok at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The non-stop Auckland service leaves Bangkok on Saturdays, returning from Auckland the following day. Off-peak return fares (available until November 19) start from $1299 (on direct services) from Christchurch to Bangkok. An extra $lOO covers the special return domestic fare between Bangkok and Chiang Mai ($l6O to Chiang Rai). Both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have excellent hotels and many reasonably priced restaurants.
