School bullying

Sir,—l read with interest and pleasure that Christchurch Boys’ High School is now a caring community. It was not always so and Mr Grice’s remarks (May 29), far from being excited and extravagant, fit my memories of the times dominated by senior boys with a passion for cruelty. Acts of kindness to junior boys were rare and, through some distorted attitude, were considered signs of weakness and a threat to the macho image. I found it impossible to sing “the school we magnify” when recovering with wounded and bloodied flesh from violence unjustly and without inquiry inflicted by boys authorised to so act. I am glad that Matthew Cunneen is proud of his school — I wanted to be — but it does no harm for him, his contemporaries and Mr Harding to know the past. I trust they then will treasure more the transformation to the peaceful, caring and productive environment which they state now exists.—Yours, etc B. COLLINS. May 12, 1989.
