Three die in plane crash
PA Napier Three people died last night in a light aircraft crash in rugged hill country north-west of Napier. The. police said the accident apparently happened soon after 7 p.m. when residents in the Waipunga area, about 19km off the Napier-Taupo highway, heard a low-flying aircraft battling through heavy weather. It was not clear whether farmers heard the impact, but emergency services were called and the police eventually made their way to the crash site by tractor. Senior-Sergeant Graeme Sawyer confirmed from the Napier police station that three bodies had been recovered. They were believed to be the only people on the aircraft. A search of the crash area was then called off for the night. The police said the aircraft was on a flight from Hamilton to Napier but became lost in the heavy cloud and rain.
