Peacock starts picking front bench

NZPA-AAP Canberra All sections of the Liberal Party would be represented on the new Coalition front bench, the reinstated Liberal leader, Andrew Peacock, said yesterday. Mr Peacock has begun selecting a new front bench following Tuesday’s leadership coup, in which he deposed John Howard.

He is expected to announce the line-up this week after consulting with the new National Party leader, Charles Blunt. “You’ll find that when the shadow Ministry comes out that all sections of the party are properly represented,” Mr Peacock said on ABC radio’s A.M. programme.

"The first criterion is talent, and if that’s not there then noone is considered. “By talent I mean in terms of actually doing the job in the shadow Ministry and not just a parliamentary job.” Mr Peacock reiterated that the former Fraser Government Minister, lan Macphee, dumped from

the Opposition front bench by Mr Howard, would be considered. Mr Peacock said in a separate interview with ABC radio in Melbourne that an early Federal election would be an advantage for the Coalition. “It would be advantageous but frankly I think we will win in any case."
