C.T.B. chairman faces censure

By

GLEN PERKINSON

A Christchurch Transport Board member, Ms Linda Purves, will try to have the board censure its chairman, Mr Pat Neary, at a meeting today.

Ms Purves’s move comes after Mr Neary moved yesterday’s meeting forward to this afternoon.

She said that was illegal because the board did not give the statutory fivedays public notification of the change. Ms Purves, who is also a C.T.B. driver, yesterday turned up at the boardroom in time for the meeting. Mr Neary arrived to explain the change to news media and union officials.

The short, informal meeting turned into a debate between the two

members, each accusing the other of making things difficult, but they were able to make jokes. Mr Neary said he made the change because two board members said they could not attend yesterday’s meeting.

But Ms Purves said that by the time Mr Neary had told her on Monday of the time change, it was too late for her to swap busdriving shifts so she could attend.

The meeting today will discuss a joint publication on concerns both organisations held on transport deregulation. Ms Purves last evening was trying to find a workmate to work her shift today so that she could attend the meeting and move that Mr Neary be censured.
