U.S. to face defence cuts

NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States Defence Secretary, Dick Cheney, formally proposed “very, very painful” cuts in the defence budget yesterday, scrapping weapons programmes worth billions of dollars and scaling back “Star Wars” spending. Mr Cheney told the House of Representatives’ armed services committee that the cuts represented “an enormous change ... a fundamental shift in direction.” Mr Cheney outlined a new defence budget of SNZ4BS billion in the fiscal year starting October 1 and SNZSO9 billion the next year. The figures do not include additional de-fence-related spending by other government departments. They represent cuts in the two years of SNZI6 billion and SNZI6 billion from figures proposed by the Reagan Administration and reflect an accord between President George Bush and Congress on cutting the over-all budget deficit.
