Call for Labour Party unity
PA Wellington The new Labour Youth president, Mr Dominic O’Sullivan, yesterday endorsed the call of the affiliates council chairman, Mr Pat Kelly, and other leading party officials to remain in the Labour Party. Mr O’Sullivan moved to quell news media speculation that a mass resignation of youth council members was imminent. While conceding that some council members would follow the former president, Mr Quentin Finlay, Mr O’Sullivan said
both he and the vicepresident, Mr Shane Fix, remained firmly committed to the New Zealand Labour Party, as did at least half the Labour Youth Council. His commitment to remain in the party in no way lessened the Youth Council’s opposition to aspects of Government policy, he said, calling on union and party members to continue their opposition through constructively promoting the alternatives set out in the party’s 1984 and 1987 election manifestos.
