Hold referendum first — M.P.

PA Wellington An Opposition member of Parliament, Mr Rob Munro, has called for a referendum to be held before the Government takes any steps to withdraw New Zealand from the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance.

The United States had suspended defence co-operation with New Zealand since the Government banned visits of nuclear-

armed or propelled ships. Mr Munro, the M.P. for Invercargill and former Army officer, said New Zealand was now faced with the stark choices of isolation leading to neutrality, or collective security with friends. The Government had no public mandate to withdraw New Zealand from the alliance, he said. New Zealanders would want full details of the advantages of with-

drawal before committing themselves to an irreversible decision “severing ties with long-standing friends.” “This is a matter of very longterm significance for all New Zealanders,” Mr Munro said. “I seek a referendum on the topic before final irrevocable steps are taken by the Labour Government,” he said.
