Ultramarathon threat
NZPA-AAP Sydney Sporting bans on South Africa look set to disrupt this year’s Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon next month. Greek runner Yiannis Kouros, who has won the event three times before, has been black-banned by the International Amateur Athletics Federation after competing in a 100-kilometre event in Stellenbosch, South Africa in February this year. The Westfield race director, Charlie Lynn, said yesterday that although Kouros was a professional runner and the I.A.A.F. could not personally ban him from running in the race, they could black mark any event he competed in and any athletes who ran against him.
