Doug Smith dies
Doug Smith, five times champion English jockey, and later a succcessful trainer, died recently at the age of 71. Smith had his first ride in 1930, when aged 13, and weighing just 33kg. He rode 3112 winners before retiring in 1967, his best season being 1947 when he rode 173 winners though even then in the shadow of Gordon Richards. Smith was the Royal jockey for three years and won the One Thousand Guineas on Hypericum and Petite Etoile and the Two Thousand Guineas on Pall Mall and Our Babu. He trained 500 winners including the 1969 Oaks winner Sleeping Partner owned by Lord Roseberry. ">
