Oaks hope wins Motukarara trial

El Guest, an exciting maiden winner at Timaru two and a half weeks ago, continued her preparation for the $50,000 Nevele R. Stud New Zealand Oaks at Addington on Saturday week with an accomplished winning run at the Motukarara trials yesterday.
Despite her Cl assessment, her connections have gambled on getting an Oaks start after studying the list of eligibles last week. On this score, they elected to abandon a start at Forbury Park last Saturday. “We don’t think there will be too many coming down from the North Island, so we should get a run,” said part-owner, Kevin Williams (of Master Mood fame). Williams, who races the El Patron filly with his wife Bonnie, trainer Dave Anderson, and Dave’s wife Sue, drove El Guest in yesterday’s trial as a preliminary for the Oaks. Anderson gained his first training and driving success behind El Guest at Timaru and needs 10 driving wins to become eligible to drive in a Group One event. El Guest turned on the speed over a middle 800 m in close to 60 seconds to wrest the lead from Diamond Fella with 1700 m left yesterday. She was not under any pressure to run home her closing 800 m in 61.8 and 400 m in 30.4 to hold out Made My Day (in the open) by half
a length. She returned 3:27.8 for
the full 2600 m, a time Williams was well satisfied with on the tight 1000 m all-weather circuit. El Guest, from the bigwinning Estella Amos family that has, produced other top fillies in Bionic Chance and Hilarious Guest, first served notice of her potential in an Invercargill D.B. Fillies’ Heat when she was parked throughout and ran second in 2:00. Her Timaru win over Flying Vance took on greater stature when that colt, highly rated by trainer Brian O’Meara, distanced his maiden rivals by 13 lengths at Forbury Park last Saturday. ■ “Outside Happy Hazel, I think she would more than hold her own against the rest of the three-year-old fillies,” said Williams. Joy’s Girl, another Can-terbury-trained Oaks contender, also satisfied her trainer, Jack Smolensk!, when second to Charming George in the C 3 and faster pace yesterday. “I was pleased with her. I haven’t done much with her since she contested the Great Northern Oaks at Auckland,” said Smolensk!.
The Smooth Fella filly was troubled by seasonal
problems during her northern visit, according to Smolenski, but apart from that, had no excuses for her failure to do better than seventh at Auckland, being swamped out of fourth money in the last few strides.
