Auriol back in lead
NZPA-AFP Ajaccio, France Didier Auriol. of France, in a Lancia Integrate charged back into the lead on the third stage of the Tour of Corsica rally, catching and passing the upstart part-time driver. Francois Chatriot, who led after the second stage. Auriol took advantage of wet weather that hit Corsica overnight to take back control. The Lancias and Toyota Celicas with their four wheel drive, performed particularly well on the slippery roads. The two wheel drive BMWs — including Auriol. a French radiologist who privately entered his BMW M 3 — and Ford Sierra Cosworths were left wallowing behind. Auriol was 15 seconds adrift on Monday night, but by mid-stage Tuesday had turned this into a one-minute eight second lead. Race organisers also said that Pierre-Cesar Baroni, who abandoned the race after his Ford Sierra veered off the road during the second special on Tuesday, had been taken to hospital to be examined. Baroni was seen to climb from his car unaided.
