Exchange riders visit

Pony club riders from five countries — Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States — are in Christchurch this week as part of the fifteenth InterPacific Pony Club Exchange. The teams have been in New Zealand for three weeks. They have visited many areas around New Zealand, and competed in a teams event at Flock House in Bulls.

The Inter-Pacific exchanges involve a month-long tour of the host country, visiting pony clubs and areas of scenic, historic and cultural interest. During the tour the teams participate in four days of training and two days of competition, all on borrowed horses. Australia won the Nation’s Cup. The Central Otago Hunt Club held its inaugural hunt last week-end on the Blackstone Hills Station in Becks, Central Otago. A field of 40 riders was led by the master of the Hunt, Glynn Smith. The new chairman of the F.E.I. three-day event committee, succeeding Vicomte Jurien de la Graviere, is Capt. the Hon. Patrick Con-nolly-Carew. He defeated Richard Meade by 41 votes to 39. Patrick Connolly-Carew has ridden for Ireland as a show jumper and eventer, has officiated on international ground juries, and was president of the Irish federation from 1979 to 1984.
