Mr Jim Winchester

PA Wellington A “Stump The Brains Trust” radio quiz figure, Mr Jim Winchester has died in Wellington.

Mr Winchester was born in London in 1918 and came to New Zealand soon after. He was educated at Lyall Bay School and Wellington College, before completing a history degree at Victoria University. In 1943, Mr Winchester displayed a broad knowledge and interest in the world on radio’s “King of Quiz” programme, six years before the late Mr Ralph Dearnley joined the programme. Mrs Winchester said

her husband was a humble, non-competitive person who first took part in the quiz as a “patriotic gesture.” “He never did it because he liked it or made anything out of it. He got his broad general knowledge from being an interested person, knowing what was going on in the world. He didn’t remember things for the sake of knowing things but because he was inDuring his early 20s, Mr Winchester worked for the “Evening Post” as a sports reporter, then joined the Public Service. He continued taking part

in quizzes, including international contests in 1968 and 1969. Probably his bestknown spell on radio began in 1970 as a panellist on “Stump ( -the Brains Trust,” which ran for nearly 15 years on National ? Radio with Messrs Ralph Dearnley, Bob Monteith, Lyell Boyes and Pat Macaskill. The producer, Mr Graeme Ross, described Mr Winchester as, “a fairly quiet type with a great depth of knowledge and an unassuming sense of humour.” Mr Winchester is sur-. vived by his wife and a son.
