Environmental post to Kiwi

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington For the first time in its 20-year history, the Q.E.C.D. Environmental Committee has a New Zealand chairman — the Secretary for the Environment, Dr Roger Blakeley. Dr Blakeley is in Paris at the environmental committee’s meeting.

The Minister for the Environment, Mr Palmer, said the environmental committee was a powerful committee dealing with issues such as global climatic change, management of hazardous substances, air pollution, economic instruments for environmental management, coastal zone management and bio-techno-logy. Dr Blakeley’s election came at a crucial time when environmental issues held centre stage internationally.

His election would help ensure New Zealand continued to have a leading influence on global environmental issues that threatened to cause major problems for the country and its South Pacific neighbours, Mr Palmer said.
