FRANK DUGGAN
The Canterbury national league women’s basketball team will be strengthened at the week-end with the arrival of Edith Duffey and Sonja Akkerman in Christchurch tomorrow afternoon from the United States. Duffey, an American, created a big impression when, contracted to Canterbury two years ago as a guard, while Akkerman, a forward, who originally comes from Christchurch, has spent the last two seasons playing in the United States. The Canterbury coach. Russell Berry, said yesterday both players would not be included In the starting lineups at the week-end. when Canterbury plays a double header at Cowles Stadium, the first against Wellington on Saturday evening and the next on Sunday afternoon against Palmerston North. Both players will be eased back into competition by Mr Berry who feels that at this stage they will better serve the team by being quietly reintroduced into the league. • No charges will now be made for car parking at Cowles Stadium during the basketball season. Originally it was intended to charge $2 a vehicle, but after discussions between the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Basketball Association it has been decided to waive the fee. The council’s recreation manager, Alan Patterson, said yesterday arrangements have been completed about the car-park after discussions between the council and the association. “The association will supervise the car-park during the evening matches and no charge will be made,” he said.
