Assn cautious
The Electricity Supply Association is giving cautious backing to the suggestion that power suppliers from Christchurch to Otago band together to buy the Clyde and Roxburgh power stations. Provided they could be bought at a fair price, considerable savings could be passed on to consumers, said the E.S.A. president, Mr Eric Johnston. The suggestion, formulated by Professor Tom
Cowan, former dean of commerce at the University of Otago, was put to the Government’s electricity restructuring task force in a submission from the Otago Chamber of Commerce. Mr Johnston said that electricity suppliers had an absolute commitment to progressively reducing prices, while, even at present rates, electricity was the "prime competitive fuel.”
