London tuition awarded
A music scholarship valued at more than $45,000 has been won by a Christchurch cellist, James Bush. Bush, a seventh form pupil at Christchurch Boys’ High School, said he was thrilled to get the scholarship, which is awarded to two New Zealand musicians each year by the Royal Schools of Music. ✓The other scholarship
was awarded to a trombonist, Kevin Price, of Auckland. The scholarship covers tuition fees for three years for Bush to attend the Royal Academy of Music in London, as well as an annual grant towards living expenses and a contribution to an air fare back to New Zealand at the end of the course. Bush, aged 17, will leave for London in Sep-
tember next year. While the scholarship was to be for this year, he asked that it be deferred so he could complete his high school studies. He has been playing the cello since he was seven under the tuition of Miss Ellen Doyle, and plays with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, in string quartets, and as a soloist.
