Prison drug use focus of survey

PA Auckland Prisoners will be asked in confidence if they take illegal drugs. A Health-Justice departments national survey wants evidence to prove that the risk of prison inmates spreading the A.I.D.S. virus is real. “We cannot put strategies in place unless we have a solid base of information,” a Health Department nurse adviser, Ms Lorraine Kerse, said. There are three risk behaviours suspected in prisons: needle and syringe sharing, unpro-

tected sexual intercourse, and tattooing with dirty needles. “We want to know what is going on, not just listen to anecdotes,” Ms Kerse said.

“I don’t believe it is lies, but hopefully the survey will prove just how much is really taking place.”

Confidentiality, especially with illegal activities, is paramount. No information will go to the prison authorities. Prison officers will also be questioned.
