Alcohol warning on gripe water
NZPA London Gripe water, the traditional remedy for colic, contains so much alcohol that parents could be giving babies the equivalent of four gins a day without exceeding the recommended dose, according to a report. “Most gripe water contains 5 per cent pure alcohol,” said Mr Tim Lobstein, author of the report published by the London Food Commission.
“The strength is higher than many commerical lagers and beers. “The recommended dose for a baby, aged two months, of 10ml can be, weight for weight, equal to an adult drinking half a measure of gin — and it may be repeated eight times a day. “For a small body which has never experienced an alcoholic drink the result could be quite stupefying.”
