Neazor stays prosecution
PA Auckland The Solicitor-General has intervened to prevent the attempted prosecution of a former high-ranking public servant, two police detectives and two constables. A stay of prosecution has been filed by the Solicitor-General, Mr Paul Neazor, Q.C., on charges laid privately against the
five by Graham Ashley Palmer. Palmer is serving a prison sentence after being convicted of a $2.5 million GST fraud last year. In the District Court in Auckland, Judge Elliott said of Mr Neazor’s action: “In effect it really puts an end to the matter.”
Palmer laid charges alleging the five men breached the Inland Revenue Act during the investigation leading to his conviction. The defence lawyer, Mr Greg Hollister-Jones, told Judge Elliott that nearly all the charges had been stayed. Those remaining were still being considered by the SolicitorGeneral.
