Agent Orange debate

PA Wellington The bitterness and social divisions caused in New Zealand by the Vietnam War, were revisited in Parliament last evening. A motion on what to do with a report dealing with allegations that the defoliant, Agent Orange, was made in New Zealand for use in the war, re-opened old divisions between supporters and .opponents of the war. Last week the Government announced an External Relations and' Trade Ministry report had found no evidence to support allegations that the chemical had been manufactured in New Plymouth by Ivon Watkins Dow. But the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, said questions had been left hanging and the matter should go to a select committee for further study. After a long and bitter debate, Parliament agreed to send the report to the Foreign Affairs and Defence Select Committee for consideration.
