Seeds pledge sought
By CHRIS MAHONY The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, will be asked to provide a certificate guaranteeing that the recent controversial shipment of Turkish wheat was clear of seeds on its arrival in New Zealand.
The shipment was clear of radiation from the Chernobyl accident. Now people were concerned that it could introduce noxious plants. The Strathallan County Council was dissatisfied with the Minister’s recent reply to a request from the council for information about the shipment and safeguards against whole seeds of prohibited species leaving the ship. It will seek a certificate signed by the Ministry of Agriculture which guarantees that no whole seeds were in the ship when it arrived at Lyttelton.
