Coach denies ‘war reports’
NZPA-AAP Sydney An angry Socceroo coach, Frank Arok, yesterday blasted attempts to turn the World Cup clash between Australia and Israel on Sunday into a war.
“We are not at war with Israel so don’t stir up trouble,” he told an Israeli journalist who sought confirmation of reports that a war could be expected. “These media reports have already created enough animosity. I’ve never had anything against Israel,” said the Socceroo coach, whose statement was echoed by the Israeli coach, Jacob Grundman. The Oceania winner will be determined on Sunday with Australia needing victory to advance to the third round while Israel requires only a draw.
But Mr Arok also announced he planned to recall tough no-nonsense defenders Gary
McDowall and Craig Moffitt into the Socceroo squad to replace two injured players. “If the injured players don’t improve, and one of them can’t walk properly at this stage, then McDowall and Moffitt will be in the squad?’ he said.
“They are probably the most physical players in the country and will put more pressure on the Israeli defence.
“It’s not going to be a pretty game on Sunday and we want to win.” The recall of McDowall will stir memories of the Olympic Games scoreless draw in Christchurch last year when the big stopper was sent off after allegedly kicking an Israeli defender, Yaron Parselani. Mr Grundman said Parselani is in the touring party and has the same chance of playing on Sunday as the others, but he will not settle his formation until Saturday.
