Davison’s X-rays show bruising

There is a possibility, if a slim one at this stage, that Grant Davison could resume riding at Nelson on Monday but more likely that the Hawke’s Bay Cup the following Saturday will see him back in action. Davison’s day started badly yesterday when first medical reports suggested his shoulder injury was a fracture but further X-rays revealed deep bruising but nothing worse. “I’m not going to call off the second day at Nelson at least until tomorrow,” a determined Davison said last evening. “I’m having intensive treatment in the next few days and while the chances of getting to Nelson are not that, good at this stage the improvement could be faster than we think.” Physiotherapy and ice packs will be the order of the day from now on as Davison seeks to retain his lead in the jockeys’ premiership and there is no lack of motivation for the challenge as far as the rider is concerned. “You can only give it your best shot but I.would really like to hang on if I could,” he said. Davison’s injury occurred when Balnacally was brought down at Waterlea on Tuesday. Considering the speed and angle of the fall, and the impact on the shoulder, suffering only bruising is a freakish result. “I’ve had a collarbone broken on that side before arid you would think it would go again with the shoulder taking the brunt of the fall like that,” the rider said.
