Lydiard to lecture
PA Auckland The top New Zealand middle distance coach, Arthur Lydiard, will give a lecture on his methods at Auckland University on Tuesday. Lydiard has coached and lectured in countries as far afield as Mexico, Finland, East Germany, Denmark, Portugal, India, China, Turkey and the United States over the last 20 years. But he has made limited appearances in New Zealand in that time. Still recognised as one of the world’s greatest middle distance coaches, Lydiard, aged 72, coached Peter Snell and John Davies to their Olympic medals in 1960 and 1964. The lecture has been organised by the recently formed Lovelock Athletic Foundation. “Many countries have made great use of Arthur’s knowledge over the past 20 years and it is especially important with the Commonwealth Games coming up in Auckland early next year that we do the same,” Mr Davies, the foundation’s executive director.
