Tennis successes
The New Zealand junior men’s tennis team continued to perform creditably on the Asian circuit, giving strong performances at the Taipei international junior championships. The No. 1 player, Troy Tipene, and the No. 3, Michel Zoricich, both reached the quarterfinals of the singles, while New Zealand’s top doubles combination of Alister Hunt and Zoricich were finalists again. However, Hunt and Zoricich could not repeat their Thailand success, losing to the Japanese players, Masuda and Tanizawa, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6. The team has moved on to the Philippines, where Tipene has been seeded first, Hunt third and Zoricich ninth in the
international junior championships. Results from Taipei.— Singles.—Tipene, first round bye; beat Hunt, 6-2, 7-6; beat Prayuk (Thailand), 6-3, 6-4; lost to Ruud (Norway), 7-5, 6-2. Hunt beat F. Setiawan (Indonesia), 6-3, 6-1; lost to Tipene. Zoricich, first round bye; beat Macaraez (Philippines), 6-3, 6-3; beat Huang (Taipei), 6-2, 6-1; lost to Wijaya (Indonesia), 6-3, 6-1. Doubles.—Tipene and Wijaya beat Tonito and Roque (Philippines), 7-6, 6-3; beat Chang and Hsieu (Taipei), 6-4, 6-4; lost to Hunt and Zoricich, 6-0, 6-3. Hunt and Zoricich beat Yang and Huang (Taipei), 6-1, 6-2; beat Yang and Chang (Taipei), 6-3, 6-0; beat Tipene and Wijaya; lost to
Masuda and Tanizawa.
• James Greenhalgh (Auckland), Andrew Krafft (Wellington) and Andrew Pope (Auckland) will represent New Zealand in the World Youth Cup qualifying tournament in Hong Kong from May 1 to 7.
The non-travelling reserve is Chad Tolcafoa (Auckland), while Craig Workram will accompany the team as mana-ger-coach.
New Zealand will be opposed by Australia, Japan, Chinese, Taipei. India, Indonesia, Israel. Republic of Korea, Thailand, Pakistan, Philippines and Syria for the four places In the W.Y.C. (16 years and under) finals in Paraguay in November.
