Vardon golf leaders The winner of the Canterbury Vardon Golf Trophy for the last four years, Brent Paterson, is leading the field for this year’s award with an adjusted stroke average of 72.3. Paterson, who has played the most rounds along with Alastair Sidford, needs to play only five more to meet the minimum qualification of 20 rounds. Liverpool on top NZPA-Reuter London Liverpool clambered back to the top of the English first division soccer table on Tuesday after beating Millwall, 2-1, with a controversial goal from John Aldridge to record its ninth successive league win. A linesman raised his flag as the Republic of Ireland striker closed in to shoot his twenty-second goal of the season after John Barnes’ effort was brilliantly saved by Brian Horne. But the offside flag was lowered and the referee, Alan Gunn, allowed the fortieth minute goal to stand — in spite of Millwall's furious protests — enabling Liverpool to displace Arsenal on goal difference at the top for the second time in four days. Wisden picks best NZA-Reuter London West Indians Jeff Dujon and Franklyn Stephenson and Australia’s Steve Waugh have been named among Wisden’s five cricketers of the year. The English county captains, Kim Barnett of Derbyshire and Phil Neale of Worcestershire, are the other two players selected in the 1989 edition of Wisden, the sport’s most authoritative reference book. Dujon, the world’s leading wicket-keeper-batsman, had an outstanding tour of England last year, finishing second in the test averages with 50.83. Stephenson, banned from international cricket for life after playing for a rebel team in South Africa, made a magnificent debut for Nottinghamhire last year, scoring 1018 runs and taking 125 wickets. Kasparov recovers NZPA-Reuter Barcelona, Spain The Russian world champion, Garry Kasparov, yesterday recovered from ’flu to beat Britain’s Jonathan Speelman in the tenth round of the World Chess Cup. After three-and-a-half hours of play in a Kings Indian, Kasparov won the game, held over from Tuesday, to take fourth place in the standings with s‘/ 2 points. The game between Valery Salov (Soviet Union) and Jesus Nogueiras (Cuba), adjourned from the ninth round, ended with a victory for Salov after 85 moves. Viktor Korchnoi (Switzerland) resigned without play in his adjourned tenth round game against Robert Huebner (West Germany). Cordwell wins match NZPA-AFP Singapore New Zealand’s Belinda Cordwell had a win in the first round of the Singapore women’s tennis championships yesterday. Cordwell, the second seed for the tournament, beat Belgian Sabine Applemans 6-2, 7-5. Australian Louis Field, a frequent visitor to New Zealand, was another first-round winner. The defending champion, Monique Javer, seeded fifth, beat fellowBriton Ann Hobbs 6-4, 6-0. Field beat Akemi Nishiya (Japan) 62, 6-4. Maya Kidowaki (Japan) beat Jonna Jonerup (Sweden) 64, 6-0; Ann Devries (Belgium) beat Nana Miyagi (Japan) 4-6, 75, 6-2 and Jill Hetherington (Canada) beat Marianne Werdel (U.S.) 6-4, 6-4.
