BHP in Timor Sea oil strike

NZPA-AAP Hobart A record 77-metre oil column has been intersected at the Challis-8 well in the Timor Sea, BHP Co, Ltd, said. The joint venture operators are preparing to run a drill stem test before the well is completed and ready for production. BHP said the successful drilling of Challis-8 would give the joint venturers seven wells instead of the three expected originally to supply the floating production platform which would be installed later this year. The Challis joint venturers are the operator, BHP, which holds 50 per cent, Ampol Exploration 6.25 per cent, Brenda Mines 1.09 per cent, the Esso Australia subsidiary, Citco Australia Petroleum, 18.75 per cent, Norcen International 12.5 per cent, Norpac Securities Australia 1.09 per cent and Santos 10.31 per cent. The joint venturers also reported an oil flow of 9595 barrels a day from a drill stem test at Jabiru--88, also in the Timor Sea. BHP said the flow was through a 74/64 inch choke. It will be suspended as a potential producer.
