Addington market Recent rain lifts mood of market

Recent rain raised optimism at the Addington Market yesterday with prices in most stock categories firmer than last week. A buoyant mood prevailed with sunny weather yesterday boosting buyer numbers round most stock pens. Quality of stock was mixed with rain still too little and too recent to have had a noticeable effect on quality. The store lamb yardings were small but about average for the time of year and weather. Generally the lambs sold for about $1 to $3 more than last week, especially for good lambs. Good lambs sold well. Competition was keen for lambs from St James station at Hanmer Springs because of good weight and well-woolled animals being offered. The top ewe lambs from this station sold to $25.75 and top wether lambs to $27.50. A total of 3173 store lambs were offered. There were small yardings of store adult ewes which were made up mostly of light-condition ewes which sold for between $5 and $7. A total of 1280 adult sheep were offered. A good gallery of buyers followed the store cattle market with prices firmer than in recent weeks. The quality was mixed. Adult store steers in light condition sold for $330 to $370. 15 to 20-month-old steers sold for $3OO to $340. Adult store heifers sold for $270 to $3lO. i 15 to 20-month-dld heifers sold for $2OO to $260. A total of 308 adult cattle were offered. The best of the calves came forward in good

condition considering the recent drought. Demand was widespread from the West Coast to Mid and South Canterbury. Prices reflected this with calves selling up to $2O above last week’s prices. Top steer calves sold for $270 to $3OO with medium steer calves selling at $2OO to $240 and smaller steer calves sold for $l6O to $l9O. Top heifer calves sold at $l7O to $2lO with medium heifer calves selling at $l3O to $l6O and small heifer calves sold at $BO to $l2O. Calves from Landcorp’s Okuku Pass and Tiromoana properties came forward in good order considering conditions, and sold well.
