By
BARRY CLARKE
Strong winds on Banks Peninsula came within one knot of hurricane force yesterday. South to south-westerly gusts reached 63 knots at the Meteorological Service recording station at Le Bons Bay at noon. Temperatures dropped to sdeg. on the Peninsula with a wind chill factor of —l5. The temperature in Christchurch was only slightly higher, about Bdeg.
By noon 18mm of rain had fallen around Christchurch. Another I.7mm fell yesterday afternoon. There was snow down to 3500 ft and hail at Wigram. The bad weather was caused by a depression which moved north from Stewart Island overnight. The storm caused Wellington Airport to close about 3.45 p.m. The airport was still closed late last evening and three Air New Zealand flights to Wellington from Christchurch were cancelled.
